Christmas Cancelled

Dec. 24th, 2009 | 02:40 pm

I woke up this morning to find snow on the ground. It hasn't snowed on Christmas/Christmas Eve here since 1980. On top of that, we're having a BLIZZARD. Holy effing man. I believe that's the first time in my life I've ever heard those conditions here.

The snow is from 4-8 inches in some places. Icicles are hanging off the roof. The trees are weighed down heavily with snow. The news said its the most snow they've ever had in my town on Christmas/Christmas Eve ever.

Out my back door, when I first opened the door, I could see a little bit of pavement. But over the course of an hour the snow has completely covered the front step up to the door about three inches.

My sister called me, she had to go to work in this. She said it was up to her knees. The wind chill tonight is supposed to be below zero.

Needless to say, we won't be having Christmas. At least not until the snow lets up and starts to melt.

It's just amazing. And to think, just last night, there was nothing and it was barely even that cold.

Merry Christmas :)

Me and my sis are gonna be hanging out in Toronto tonight, and I'm so excited! We'll be checking out the Festival of Lights and doing dinner at Kensington Market (or this awesome Korean restaurant) and then doing Christmas shopping, and some general hanging out maybe! I'm so looking forward to doing this - I haven't done anything with my sister in forever. It's gonna be so nice!

And then either tomorrow night or Wednesday, I'll probably be seeing Avatar with my friend Steve and possibly someone else, and then after that's Christmas! Yay! Family! Presents! Food! And then after that, Boxing Day (and hopefully an acquired 1TB external hard drive, thank you Boxing Day sales) and more family and Christmas and presents! Fwee!

This week is shaping up to be pretty damn awesome, despite work. But even work's not so bad, so meh! :)

So its weird living on the snow line.

They were forcasting about 12 inches on friday, but I only got about 6 inches. Although a coworker who lives all of ten minutes away got over 20 inches. My parents who live just an hour away got 22 inches, and so on and so on.

Things are different by the mile here, and its all because its a very thin line between snow and rain for us.

My family may be without power till Wednesday, they haven't had it since Friday. I'm supposed to go home that day... but I think I'll make sure they've showered before I get there, haha. I hope I can get our driveway. We have a half mile private drive that gets pretty bad when it snows, because it never seems to melt, and it has some steep inclines on it.

I refuse to take the five trips it would take to haul gifts, KC, and my stuff to the house on half mile tracks in the snow, haha.

And I really dont' want to stay with my mom... *shudder*

So here's hoping my Dad and Stepmom get alot of sun and warmer weather this week! haha.

Oh, and I love my new Motorola Droid. Which I left at home accidentally today. Now I not only don't have my phone, but my internet and music player for work. Booooooo!

its almost christmas! Here's hoping the last two gifts come in the mail today or tomorrow. Stupid snow slowed things down!

Tomorrow is tree decoration and proposed movie watching so that should be nice, after about three hours of travel back from friend's house. Hoowee. I still don't know what I'm doing for New Years. Oh man, my life is so chaotic. Weee!

All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to

Mom is probably the only one on my friends list who really knows what I mean, but I've discovered that Quebec drivers are the South Carolina drivers of Canada.

(No offense to any of you who might be in SC, but...when I lived in NC they were the bane of my automotive existence. >.>)

Edit: So more people in fact understand and/or share the pain! I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

It's the future, but there's no flying cars yet - I feel gypped!

Luckily I am sated by the fact that David Tennant, Simon Pegg, and Dan Aykroyd are all going to be in the same movie very soon, and then I will be getting more Simon Pegg (as well as Nick Frost) in another movie, and yet another movie as well.

I almost don't care what else comes out in the next two years, though I am certainly prepared to be amazed (hopefully), so long as those movies are made. :D

"Stocking Stuffers" as seen by stores

I see ads in the paper/online about items that are perceived as "stocking stuffers," things like CDs and high tech thermometers and etc that can cost up to $30.00.

In my household, at least, this is not a stocking stuffer. This is a full blown gift. If it's $30.00 you put it in a box or a bag and stick in under the tree.

Our idea of stocking stuffers are under $5.00 and usually involve fruit, lotto tickets, candy, and etc.

I'd love to live in a place where that $30.00 shot glass that measures how much booze you have is considered a stocking stuffer.

Oh Fuck Off, Grasshopper

I just read this wonderful article speculating on the idea of treating religion secularly - that is to say, keeping all the good parts (community, tradition, art, etc...) of it and dismissing the denial-of-reality parts of it, much like how a "secular Jew" treats their status, with respect to history and tradition but not actual belief. It also serves as a good rebuke to the "religion as metaphor" trope that's circulated for a long while (and that always gets on my nerves.) If you're even remotely skeptic about religion, you should read it. I quite agree with it, actually - I sure as hell wouldn't mind religion being treated like Trekkies (Trekkers?) treat Star Trek, and quite understand how it could work too, being a Trekkie (Trekker?) myself. There's no reason why you can't separate the diamonds from the coal here, except, I guess, religious stubbornness.

Then again, it is pretty idealistic, and though it might have already happened in an ideal world, I don't think it could ever happen in this one. Alas!

In The Eye

So I bought my first "beauty" product in years (I think around three or four) yesterday, one of those "under-eye" rollers that's supposed to put caffeine into the "bags" under your eyes and thus stimulate the skin and reduce those "bags". It's actually a nifty idea for people like me anyway, given my chronic (and sometimes self-inflicted) insomnia. I don't mind the tired (rather, I've gotten used to it) - that's what caffeine is for - but the bags under my eyes can look pretty horrible at times, so I'm hoping this stuff will work.

I've always gone au naturel when it comes to makeup with few exceptions, and even then usually someone else put it on me because they thought I should have it, either because of incredible self-confidence or because I'm simply too lazy to worry about makeup. (I vote the former - it's the better option, really. I'm awesome, not lazy. Pfffft.) Wandering into the makeup section of the drug store was a bit bizarre for me, I didn't even know where to look for the roller, and it took a few minutes to find it. People actually come to this section regularly instead of skipping it to go buy the necessary stuff? =O

I guess you can say I'm a "tomboy" when it comes to my looks, though I've never overtly made a point of it - I prefer not to wear dresses and love my jeans, or at least pants, I don't do makeup, I've only ever had my hair done once that I can remember (usually it's either up in a ponytail when long, or shoulder-length when short), and any shoe heels other than flat ones are impossible for me to walk in. I'm addicted to snarky t-shirts and comfortable hoodies. I'm also hopeless in the kitchen unless I have a step-by-step and the massive amounts of initiative to actually make something. As for cleaning, there is a phrase: "special occasions."

So yeah. Stuff.
